How to Partition Complex Programming
Run/Right/Fast. The classic problem partitioning strategy, taught to me by my dear departed Pappy on the first day I started programming, is to make the code work then make is clean then make it fast (if necessary). Solving the “correct/clean/performant code” problem all at once can be overwhelming. Don’t be overwhelmed. Solve one at a time.
There is a lot of great advice in this post but the above is something I try to practice every time I seat down to write code.

My First Angular and Beers Meetup 🤓🍻
I enjoyed my first Angular and Beers meeting hosted by the Google Developers Group - Space Coast and Groundswell. We got learn more about using Material Design components in Angular. Thanks to Michael Prentice for speaking and sponsoring the event.

My new git alias — diffmaster
I’m going to admit making some mistakes lately while doing
git merge
s during pull requests. I determined one of my biggest problems was the way diffs are presented in BitBucket. It can make things look very unclear because huge chunks of code will look deleted only to be added back in at later points in bits and pieces. It is hard to realize the nuanced changes usually made in code and can cause headaches down the road. To combat this problem I wrote a quickgit alias
calleddiffmaster
that will run a diff of the current branch against the master branch. The command I aliased isgit difftool master…<branch-to-compare>
. I added the following lines to my[alias]
section of my.gitconfig
.branch-name = "!git rev-parse --abbrev-ref HEAD" diffmaster = "!git difftool master... $(git branch-name)"

Angular, I like the cut of your jib
I’ve been exploring the world of front-end frameworks lately. In particular I’ve been looking at what Angular has to offer to us old heads[1] and I have to say I like what I see. I’ve been going through a free course on Code School to get the basics. In addition to Angular I’ve also been reading up on using .NET Core to build microservices. Web development of the future is here and I need to learn more about it[2].
[1] This term is used a lot in hip hop culture referring to us "old" dudes who like stuff from back in the day. Urban Dictionary has a pretty good definition:
1. Someone who has been in the scene before you or your group.
[2] I remember looking at Angular when it was transitioning to Angular2 and thought it was still very fluid and I didn't want to invest the time into learning it then.

A peek into the alt-right 🤢
I’ve been listening to the latest episode of This American Life, White Haze. I have not listened to the whole thing yet but so far I am not surprised but I am pretty disgusted.
